Healthcare and Companionship: Navigating the Indian Medical Visa and Indian Medical Attendant Visa

India has emerged as a global hub for medical tourism, attracting patients from across the world seeking high-quality, affordable healthcare.1 From advanced cardiac surgeries to specialized alternative treatments, India's medical infrastructure and skilled professionals offer a beacon of hope for many.2 To facilitate this, the Indian government provides specialized visa categories: the Indian Medical Visa for patients and the Indian Medical Attendant Visa for their accompanying family members or caregivers.3 Understanding the specific requirements and application processes for both is crucial for a smooth journey towards treatment and recovery.

The Lifeline: Indian Medical Visa

The Indian Medical Visa (e-Medical Visa for eligible nationalities) is specifically designed for foreign nationals whose sole objective of visiting India is to seek medical treatment in established and recognized hospitals or treatment centers. This visa category ensures that patients receive the necessary care without the complexities associated with other visa types.

Eligibility and Purpose:

The medical visa is granted for a wide range of serious ailments, including but not limited to: neurosurgery, ophthalmic disorders, heart-related problems, renal disorders, organ transplantation, congenital disorders, gene therapy, radiotherapy, plastic surgery, and joint replacement.4 It is crucial that the treatment is sought at a recognized medical institution in India.

Key Requirements for an Indian Medical Visa (e-Medical Visa):

  1. Valid Passport: Your passport must be valid for a minimum of six months from your intended date of arrival in India and contain at least two blank pages for immigration stamps.5

  2. Digital Photograph: A recent (within three months) passport-style color photograph against a plain white background. It must show a full frontal view of your head, face centered, with a neutral expression and eyes open.6 Ensure it meets digital specifications (JPEG format, 10KB-1MB file size, minimum 350x350 pixels dimensions).

  3. Scanned Passport Bio Page: A clear, high-resolution scan of the biographical page of your passport (the page with your photo and personal details).7

  4. Letter from Indian Hospital: This is the most critical document. You must obtain an original invitation letter from a recognized or reputable Indian hospital/treatment center. This letter, on the hospital's official letterhead, must:

  • Clearly state the patient's name and passport number.

  • Confirm the patient's admission for medical treatment.

  • Indicate the nature of the medical treatment or illness.

  • Specify the recommended duration of treatment.

  • Include the tentative date of admission.

  • Be generated from the Medical and Ayush Visa Portal (https://indianfrro.gov.in/frro/medicalvaluetravel) as per recent guidelines.

  • Medical Documents from Home Country: Relevant medical reports, diagnostic test results, and a referral letter or preliminary medical advice from a hospital or doctor in your home country, attesting to the requirement for treatment in India.

  • Proof of Financial Capability: Documentation demonstrating sufficient funds to cover your medical expenses, accommodation, and living costs during your stay in India (e.g., bank statements, salary certificates, sponsorship letters).8

  • Application Process (e-Medical Visa):

    • Official Website: Apply through the official Indian e-Visa website: indianvisaonline.gov.in/evisa/tvoa.html.

    • Form Completion: Select "e-Medical Visa" and accurately fill out the online application form. Provide all personal details as per your passport.

    • Document Upload: Upload the digital photograph, scanned passport bio page, and the hospital invitation letter.

    • Payment: Pay the non-refundable e-Visa fee online using a credit or debit card.9

    • Receive ETA: Processing typically takes 3 to 5 business days. Once approved, you will receive an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) via email. Print this ETA and carry it with you along with your original passport and all supporting medical documents.

    • Arrival in India: At a designated entry port (29 airports, 5 seaports), proceed to the e-Visa counter for biometric collection and visa stamping.

    Validity of Medical Visa:

The e-Medical Visa is usually granted for a validity of 60 days from the date of first arrival in India and allows triple entry.10 It can be extended in India by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) based on the patient's medical condition and hospital recommendation.11 For stays longer than 180 days, mandatory FRRO registration within 14 days of arrival is required.

The Support System: Indian Medical Attendant Visa

Recognizing that patients often require support during their medical journey, the Indian government provides the Indian Medical Attendant Visa (e-Medical Attendant Visa).12 This visa is issued to accompanying family members or close relatives of the patient holding an Indian Medical Visa.13

    Eligibility and Purpose:

    • This visa is primarily for close relatives (spouse, children, parents) or individuals with blood relations to the patient.

    • A maximum of two attendants are usually permitted per patient.14

    • The validity of the Indian Medical Attendant Visa is co-terminus with the Indian Medical Visa of the patient.15

Key Requirements for an Indian Medical Attendant Visa (e-Medical Attendant Visa):

    1. Valid Passport, Digital Photo, Scanned Bio Page: Same requirements as for the Medical Visa.

    2. Proof of Relationship: Documents establishing your relationship with the patient (e.g., marriage certificate for spouse, birth certificate for children/parents).

    3. Letter from Indian Hospital: The invitation letter from the Indian hospital must explicitly mention the name and passport number of the medical attendant(s) accompanying the patient.16 This letter should also be generated from the Medical and Ayush Visa Portal.

    4. Copy of Patient's Medical Visa: If the patient has already obtained their Medical Visa, a copy of it is required. If applying together, this is not needed as the applications will be linked.

    5. Declaration: A declaration by the medical attendant confirming their role as an escort to the patient.

    Application Process (e-Medical Attendant Visa):

    • The application process is identical to the e-Medical Visa, using the same official e-Visa website.

    • Select "e-Medical Attendant Visa" as the service type.

    • Accurately fill out the form, providing patient's details and ensuring all required documents, especially the hospital letter mentioning both patient and attendant, are uploaded.17

    • Pay the fee and receive your ETA.

    Important Considerations for Both Visas:

    • Accuracy is Paramount: Any discrepancies in information can lead to rejection or delays.

    • Official Website: Always use the official Indian e-Visa portal.

    • Non-Extendable/Non-Convertible (Initial): While Medical Visas can be extended in India by FRROs, initial e-Medical/Attendant Visas are generally non-extendable or non-convertible to other visa types while in India without specific medical grounds.

    • FRRO Registration: If the Medical/Medical Attendant Visa is valid for more than 180 days, registration with the concerned FRRO/FRO is mandatory within 14 days of arrival in India.

    • Designated Entry Ports: E-Visas are valid only for entry through specific international airports and seaports.18

By meticulously following these guidelines, patients and their attendants can smoothly obtain their Indian Medical Visa and Indian Medical Attendant Visa, ensuring their focus remains on treatment and recovery in India's advanced healthcare landscape.
